Review: Fistful of Dynamite @ The Fighting Cocks by @NicTomTom

Fistful of Dynamite

1st May 2010

Bank holidays – we’ve all peaked too soon on these rare occasions when the government deem us an extra day from work.  If we were Spanish or Greek we’d have extra free days all the time and know how to handle ourselves.  But we don’t!

So, in a bid to be good and save myself for the music and alcohol marathon that is The Camden Crawl I embarked on a quiet Saturday evening in Moseley’s Fighting Cocks pub.  Food, half pints and the friends I categorise as a good influence.

Little did we know that the mini balcony had been vacated of tables to fit a band in.  Pub? Alcohol?  Free music?  We didn’t need much persuasion to stay longer than intended.  And I am extremely glad we did.

Fistful of Dynamite emerge and attempt to grab the audience by the throat.  From people’s muted reactions they weren’t expecting a band, to some live music in a pub seemed an alien concept.  So the band buttered them up with two covers and started to gain attention.

Thankfully the rest of the set was their own fusion of hip hop, funk and jazz.  The eight piece, and get this – I hear there is even more of them, were refreshing to both the ears and eyes.  They exude this natural, syncopated, head nodding choreography which becomes infectious.  Musically their brand of full band funk with a classic hip hop twist makes them pretty original on the Birmingham scene.  You can’t help but grin from ear to ear and love this band; they’ve easily won the crowd over.  Their hour set eventually results in full audience participation.  Awesome! These guys can make anyone want to party!

Five Leffe’s later and I’m stumbling home wondering if I’ll make the train to Camden in the morning. . . but that’s another story.
